In a controversial marketing stunt timed nine months before Grand Theft Auto VI’s November 19 release, electronics retailer Komplett in Norway has promised free copies of the much hyped, highly anticipated game to any Norwegian parents whose baby arrives exactly on launch day. While it is doubtful that obtaining a new and highly addictive video game on the same day you are blessed with the one thing that will guarantee to take all your free time, the games retailer loves the idea and are willing to risk causing divorce between new parents later this year.
The promotion, unveiled in an Instagram Reel on February 11, features cheeky posters encouraging gaming fans to “start the mission” now for a November payoff. “This is actually not nonsense,” the caption reads. “GTA 6 is released in nine months, and if you have a baby on the launch date, you will get the game for free from us. “Komplett, a specialist in gaming and PC gear, positions the offer as a fun nod to the game’s hype amid rumours of a €100+ price tag.
Norway’s modest population minimises giveaway risks, making it savvy advertising for the blockbuster title, which has been delayed twice from 2025 to its current date. Online buzz has exploded, with Reddit users mocking the impracticality: “The idea of a new parent having time to… play a new game is really quite funny,” quipped ThreeTreesForTheePls. Others joked, “They should be giving out condoms,” or warned that newborns trump gaming.
The gimmick echoes Bethesda’s 2011 Skyrim contest: Parents naming their 11/11/11 baby “Dovahkiin” scored lifetime free games, a promise one family claimed. Komplett skips the naming clause, with no “Jason” or “Lucia” required (characters from the game).
