Real Possum Infiltrates Australian Airport Gift Shop, Hides Perfectly Still Among Plush Toy Possums

โ€œA real live brushtail possum infiltrated Hobart Airport's gift shop and spent quality time nestled among the plush toy animals, looking, by all accounts, extremely comfortable. Staff discovered it sitting in the native plush section. Things got chaotic when it decided to take a stroll into the departure lounge and passengers lost their collective minds trying to film it.โ€

Why It's Weird

Some stories exist in a category all their own, defying easy explanation or categorization. While the weirdness score is more modest, the story still offers a fascinating glimpse into life's unexpected moments.

A real possum nestled among stuffed animals has caused a sensation among travellers at Hobart Airport's gift shop.

The animal "appeared calm" but then took a walk outside the shop, which "caused pandemonium" in the departure lounge, a worker at the airport says.

It is unclear how the possum entered the building, with building redevelopment works a possible explanation.

A real possum nestled among soft toys and animals in a gift shop has thrilled passengers and given airport staff something unusual to deal with in Hobart.

Liam Bloomfield, multi-site manager with Lagardere AWPL, at Hobart's airport in Cambridge, said staff members found the possum around 11.45am today.

"We found the possum sitting within the native plush," he said.

Mr Bloomfield said the animal "was not stressed" and appeared calm โ€” although things became much less calm when the animal left the store and took a tour of the airport.

"We had passengers here, there and everywhere, taking videos," he said.

"It was a bit of a mad rush to make sure it was safe and no passengers were disrupted and that the possum got back home."

Mr Bloomfield said the real possum was "safely escorted" out of the terminal by Hobart Airport management.

He said how the possum got into the airport building was "a true mystery", but speculated it could be because of "redevelopment works" that are underway.

He described the possum's visit as a "nice little spike of happiness" during a normal day's airport business.

Texas Town Called Bug Tussle Has Lost Over 70 Street Signs to Thieves Who Want Them as Souvenirs

Bug Tussle, a Texas town of fifteen people, has had more than seventy street signs stolen by souvenir hunters who can't resist the name โ€” and the Department of Transportation has finally stopped replacing them. The residents are proud of the name anyway, which may or may not have originated at an insect-ruined church ice cream social.

Boston Has Installed a Bright Yellow Pay Phone That Only Calls One Place: a Senior Housing Complex in Nevada

A biotech company has planted a bright yellow payphone in Brookline, Massachusetts that does exactly one thing: call the lobby of a senior housing complex in Reno, Nevada. No keypad, no buttons โ€” just pick up and chat with a stranger three time zones away. The experiment targets what the company calls two of America's loneliest demographic groups: young adults and older adults.

LA Metro Lost & Found Has a Prosthetic Leg, Blowtorches, and a 55-Inch TV โ€” People Leave 15,000 Items Behind Per Year

The Los Angeles Metro quietly warehouses about 15,000 lost items every year โ€” and while the usual suspects (phones, backpacks, glasses) pile up daily, the collection has grown to include a prosthetic leg, a 55-inch TV, blowtorches, industrial electrical generators, and a full case of VHS tapes. Only 30% of items ever find their way home.
