Brothers Build Robot Nicknamed "The Revenger" That Solves a 4x4x4 Rubik's Cube in 45 Seconds โ€” Shattering a Record That Stood for Over a Decade

โ€œTwo brothers from Bristol built a four-armed robot called The Revenger for a university final project โ€” and then used it to demolish a Guinness World Record that had stood since 2014. The robot solved a 4x4x4 Rubik's Cube in 45.3 seconds, which is impressive until you learn that the fastest robot for the smaller 3x3x3 cube does it in 0.103 seconds.โ€

Why It's Weird

Some stories exist in a category all their own, defying easy explanation or categorization. While the weirdness score is more modest, the story still offers a fascinating glimpse into life's unexpected moments.

A pair of brothers with a passion for robotics and computing combined their skills to break a record that had stood for more than a decade.

Matthew and Thomas Pidden (both UK) designed and built a robot that solved a puzzle cube in just 45.30 seconds.

Demonstrating their miraculous machine at the University of Bristol on 12 May 2025, they smashed the record for fastest robot to solve a 4x4x4 puzzle cube.

They absolutely obliterated the previous record of 1 min 18.68 seconds that was set over 10 years ago in 2014.

Matthew told us: โ€œI decided to break the record as part of my undergraduate final project. I have always enjoyed Rubikโ€™s Cubes as a child and computer science. Combining the two felt like a natural progression and a great project.โ€

The robot was very much a joint effort between the brothers. While Matthew used his skills in maths, computer science and robotics to design the robot and programme it, among other things, Thomas used his know-how to design many of the 3D parts used in the final product.

In a video of the brothersโ€™ attempt, the cube is seen in the middle of the machine, with four robotic arms surrounding it.

The arms take turns to swoop in and turn the sides of the cube at rapid speed until all the colours are lined up correctly.

The group of people whoโ€™ve gathered to watch break out in cheers and applause as the robot officially solves the cube in record time.

And it had been a tense build up to that moment.

The first two attempts had failed but the third set the record with a time of 55 seconds. But convinced it could go quicker, the brothers carried on.

Attempts four and five failed too, but the sixth gave them that final time โ€“ certainly one to be proud of.

Explaining how it works, Matthew said: โ€œThe robot uses two cameras to scan the cube. Both cameras were blocked by physical sliding plastic shutters. These were removed by hand at the start of each record attempt.

โ€œUsing these shutters meant the cameras could not see any faces of the cube before the attempt. The cube was solved entirely by the robot and the software running on the laptop without any external networks.โ€

What will the brothers do for their next teamup?

How does this make you feel?

Malta Will Pay Young Drivers $29,000 to Surrender Their License for Five Years

Malta has launched a scheme offering young drivers โ‚ฌ25,000 to surrender their driving licenses for five years โ€” essentially paying people to stop wanting a car. The catch: once surrendered, the license is permanently suspended, and you'll need 15 hours of lessons to ever legally drive again. Initial interest has been described as "very high," which says something about either Malta's traffic or the state of millennial finances.

Japan Now Sells a Life-Size Psyduck Chair You Can Sit In When You're Feeling Overwhelmed

Japanese furniture maker Cellutane has created a life-sized Psyduck bead-filled sofa chair โ€” because if you are going to have a stress-induced breakdown, you might as well do it inside a giant, perpetually overwhelmed Pokemon. The chair is stuffed with sugobeads for maximum sink-in comfort, has a machine-washable cover, and costs a very reasonable $183 for the privilege of being hugged by a creature who truly gets it.
