Leonard the Escaped African Oryx Is Terrorizing a Nashville Neighborhood

โ€œNashville has done it again. An escaped African oryx named Leonard has been doing a leisurely neighbourhood tour of Joelton, Tennessee โ€” wandering through yards, farms, and roads while locals frantically track him on social media. One resident noted that every time the world gets too chaotic, Nashville dispatches a large exotic animal as a distraction, and honestly that's a public service. Tennessee, for the record, has zero laws against owning an oryx.โ€

Why It's Weird

Some stories exist in a category all their own, defying easy explanation or categorization. While the weirdness score is more modest, the story still offers a fascinating glimpse into life's unexpected moments.

March 6 (UPI) -- Residents of a Tennessee neighborhood have been tracking the movements of an unusual visitor -- an escaped African antelope.

Lance Carter captured photos of the oryx, an antelope species native to Africa, when it ran into morning traffic earlier this week near Old Marrowbone Road in the Joelton neighborhood of Nashville.

"It was on the right side of the road sticking out of the woods -- was the back end of an animal, at the time I thought was a really big goat," Carter told WSMV-TV. "But I didn't know what it was. I've never seen anything like it before."

Joelton resident Gigi de Lugo, who nicknamed the antelope Leonard, said the animal has been spotted all over the neighborhood, turning up in yards, farms and roads.

Leonard's presence in the area evoked memories of Ed the zebra, who spent eight days on the loose in Rutherford County in 2025.

"It just seems that whenever we have a lot going on in the world, some exotic animal is loose around Nashville, and a great distraction and adorable," de Lugo told WKRN-TV. "We're hoping he ... can get caught, so that he doesn't hurt or cause anything as far as a car accident as well."

Leonard's origins remain unclear, although some residents speculated he may have escaped from a local exotic animal farm. Tennessee does not have any laws prohibiting oryx ownership.

Malta Will Pay Young Drivers $29,000 to Surrender Their License for Five Years

Malta has launched a scheme offering young drivers โ‚ฌ25,000 to surrender their driving licenses for five years โ€” essentially paying people to stop wanting a car. The catch: once surrendered, the license is permanently suspended, and you'll need 15 hours of lessons to ever legally drive again. Initial interest has been described as "very high," which says something about either Malta's traffic or the state of millennial finances.

Japanese furniture maker Cellutane has created a life-sized Psyduck bead-filled sofa chair โ€” because if you are going to have a stress-induced breakdown, you might as well do it inside a giant, perpetually overwhelmed Pokemon. The chair is stuffed with sugobeads for maximum sink-in comfort, has a machine-washable cover, and costs a very reasonable $183 for the privilege of being hugged by a creature who truly gets it.
