Colorado woman captures video of rare snownado

Mother Nature decided to show off in Colorado by spawning a rare snownado — basically a dust devil that went to winter school and learned some proper moves. Mandy Campbell was so mesmerized by the swirling snow tornado that she forgot to hit record until the very end, giving us all the meteorological equivalent of filming your kid playing football but only catching them walking back to the bench. The National Weather Service confirmed it was legit, because apparently even weather experts need proof when nature gets this extra.

Why It's Weird

Global news often reveals cultural differences that can seem almost alien to outside observers. While the weirdness score is more modest, the story still offers a fascinating glimpse into life's unexpected moments.

Feb. 6 (UPI) -- A woman in Colorado captured video when a "snownado," also known as a snow devil, touched down in the Divide area.

Mandy Campbell shared video on social media showing the whirlwind swirling snow into the air.

"I was so mesmerized that I didn't record it until the very end," Campbell wrote.

The National Weather Service confirmed the snow devil touched down Tuesday night.

Sydney Jackson, chief meteorologist for KKTV 11, said it was a rare scene.

"We don't see this all the time," she said. "So think of like a dust devil that you may have seen before, but this with snow in Divide."

She said the snow devil was "pretty quick moving, but pretty tall as well."
