Runners Earn Guinness World Record for Deepest Marathon โ€” Over 3,000 Feet Underground

โ€œFifty-five runners from 18 countries descended over 3,600 feet into a working Swedish mine and ran a full 26.2-mile marathon โ€” wearing headlamps, sweating through the humidity, and breaking a Guinness World Record in the process. They also raised around $1 million for charity, which is somehow not the most impressive part of that sentence.โ€

Why It's Weird

Some stories exist in a category all their own, defying easy explanation or categorization. While the weirdness score is more modest, the story still offers a fascinating glimpse into life's unexpected moments.

March 11 (UPI) -- A group of runners held a certified event over 3,000 feet underground, earning them a Guinness World Record for the deepest marathon.

The marathon took place in Garpenberg, Sweden, and featured 55 runners from across 18 countries. The course measured 3,669 ft. and 10 inches underground.

Guinness World Records noted that the depth is between the height of the world's tallest waterfall, Angel Falls, and the U.K's highest mountain known as Ben Nevis.

Runners had to wear headlamps to compete in the event, which contained 11 laps and raised around $1million for charity.

"It' hot, it's humid, it's a bit dusty, but we're good," one of the competitors told Guinness World Records.

The event was a joint venture between companies BecomingX, ICMM and Boliden. The previous Guinness World Record for deepest marathon went to the Crystal Mine Underground Marathon in Germany, which took place 1,640 ft. and 5 inches below sea level.

Malta Will Pay Young Drivers $29,000 to Surrender Their License for Five Years

Malta has launched a scheme offering young drivers โ‚ฌ25,000 to surrender their driving licenses for five years โ€” essentially paying people to stop wanting a car. The catch: once surrendered, the license is permanently suspended, and you'll need 15 hours of lessons to ever legally drive again. Initial interest has been described as "very high," which says something about either Malta's traffic or the state of millennial finances.

Japan Now Sells a Life-Size Psyduck Chair You Can Sit In When You're Feeling Overwhelmed

Japanese furniture maker Cellutane has created a life-sized Psyduck bead-filled sofa chair โ€” because if you are going to have a stress-induced breakdown, you might as well do it inside a giant, perpetually overwhelmed Pokemon. The chair is stuffed with sugobeads for maximum sink-in comfort, has a machine-washable cover, and costs a very reasonable $183 for the privilege of being hugged by a creature who truly gets it.
